Does a Manzilian Hurt? An Honest Pain Scale From a Studio That Does Them Daily

TL;DR: The Short Version, For Guys Who Are Already Nervous

  • The sting is sharp and lasts 1 to 2 seconds per strip, then it’s gone. No lingering aches here!

  • The base of the penis and mons pubis are the worst zones. The scrotum is nowhere near as bad as you’re currently imagining.

  • Your first appointment is the hardest one you will ever have. By the third, the hair comes in finer, and the whole thing drops to background noise.

  • Hair needs to be about ½ inch long (roughly a grain of rice). That means at least 4-5 weeks of no trimming or shaving.

  • The rest of the industry books 30 to 45 minutes, and ours only take about 15 minutes. That difference is the single biggest thing standing between you and a bad time.

  • Rebook every 4 to 6 weeks

Search “does a Manzilian hurt?” and every article that comes back opens by promising it barely does, which is a strange thing to say to a grown man who can feel his own nerve endings. We're not doing that. At Ted D Bare, we've beenwaxing men in San Jose since 2006, with roughly ten male clients coming through the studio daily.

So instead of soothing you, this guide gives you the honest pain scale zone by zone, the prep that actually lowers it, what happens minute by minute in the room (including the thing you’re quietly worried about), and the one variable almost nobody else talks about.

Does a Manzilian Hurt? Yes, and We Named the Company After It

There’s a reason we’re called Ted D Bare Pain Co and not Ted D Bare Gentle Wellness Sanctuary. When you book with us, you’re committing to the pain. We just make it fast.

Here’s what it actually feels like: The wax goes on warm, which is pleasant and lulls you into a false sense of security. Then it comes off. You get a hot, snapping sting at the exact moment of the pull, and it flushes warm for a second or two afterward. Then nothing. Between strips, you feel absolutely nothing at all, which is the part nobody tells you. It’s not sustained pain. It’s just a series of very short, very rude surprises.

Waxing for men in the pubic region does have one thing working against it: the hair’s usually coarser than what we pull off a bikini line, so it puts up more of a fight. But it also has one thing working for it: the skin in the area tends to be a little thicker, so the two roughly cancel out. A male Brazilian wax lands in the same neighborhood as a female Brazilian on the pain scale, and we do both all day.

Every guy who walks out of here says a version of the same sentence: that was worse than I wanted and better than I feared.

Where It Hurts Most: The Manzilian Pain Map

Everyone tenses up for the sack and the back, and it’s genuinely one of the easier parts. It’s the base of the penis that makes grown men rethink their life choices. Once you know that going in, you stop fighting the whole appointment, and it gets easier immediately.

That last point is not fluff. Tensing up is the one thing you control that makes the sensation worse, because tight skin does not release wax cleanly. Knowing where the actual hard part is means you stop white-knuckling the easy 80% of the appointment.

Zone Pain level Why
Base of the penis 8 out of 10 Thin skin tethered right over bone, coarse roots, and hair growing in three directions at once
Pubic mound 7 out of 10 The most hair and the thickest roots, but flat, sturdy skin
Crack and inner cheeks 6 out of 10 Tight skin, stubborn follicles, awkward angles
Perineum 6 out of 10 Thin skin and a dense concentration of nerve endings
Scrotum 4 out of 10 Loose skin lifts and releases easily. Shocking, but true
Shaft 3 out of 10 Finer hair, mobile skin, over in two or three strips

Curious how this compares to getting your back, chest, or legs done? We ratedevery body part we wax on the same honest scale.

The Pain Variable Nobody Talks About: How Long You’re On the Table

photo-of-a-shirtless-man-in-a-bathing-suit-lifting-himself-out-of-an-infinity-pool-at-sunset.

Everybody online wants to sell you numbing cream. Almost nobody talks about duration, which is strange, because duration is the whole ballgame (pun intended).

The industry standard for a male Brazilian wax is 30 to 45 minutes. Ours run about 15.

That’s not a marketing rounding error. We built and trademarked a 15-minute Manzilian technique, teach it to estheticians nationally through the Lady Peng Waxing Summits, and have been refining it since we opened the first body-waxing-only studio in San Jose back in 2006. Roughly ten male clients come through here a day. We are not learning on you.

Same sting per strip. One third of the time spent anticipating the next one. If you’ve shopped around for waxing in San Jose and seen hour-long appointment blocks on the booking calendar, that’s not thoroughness. That’s a waxer who’s not done enough of these.

Does Soft Wax Hurt More Than Hard Wax? Let’s Kill This Myth

Search around, and you’ll find people insisting hard wax is the only acceptable option below the belt, and that soft wax on a scrotum is basically a war crime. This gets repeated constantly by people who have never used a good soft wax formula.

We use soft wax exclusively, and it’s a deliberate choice, not a shortcut. Soft wax spreads far thinner than hard wax, which means it grips hair without gluing itself to your skin and clears a much larger area per pull. Fewer pulls plus a shorter appointment beats a "gentler" wax that keeps you on the table for 45 minutes. We formulate the wax we use, too, so we know exactly what’s going on your skin. If you want the chemistry, we broke it down in ourguide to soft wax done right.

Bad soft wax hurts. Bad hard wax hurts, too. Technique and speed matter more than which tub it came out of.

How to Prep So Your First Manzilian Hurts Less

Prep is genuinely the difference between a spicy 15 minutes and a miserable one.

  • Let it grow to about ½ inch. That’s roughly a grain of rice. Too short and the wax can’t grip.

  • Do not trim. Do not shave. Every time somebody trims at home to be helpful, we get patchy stubble that’s too short to remove and a silently screaming waxer. Leave the razor alone for 4 to 5 weeks before your appointment.

  • Exfoliate 24 to 48 hours ahead. Dead skin traps hair and blocks the wax from making clean contact. A physical exfoliator like our 50 Grit does the job.

  • Show up clean and product-free. No lotion, no oil, no cologne down there. All of it puts a barrier between wax and hair.

  • Skip the coffee and the pre-appointment beer. Caffeine winds up your nervous system. Alcohol thins your blood and can cause minor bleeding at the follicle.

  • Wear loose boxers. Tight briefs pressed against freshly waxed skin is a rookie mistake you only make once.

One medical note worth taking seriously: the American Academy of Dermatology advises against waxing if you have taken isotretinoin in the last six months, and says toavoid retinoid creams and never wax sunburned skin. Tell your waxer what you’re on. We would much rather reschedule you than tear your skin.

What Actually Happens in the Room, Including the Thing You’re Worried About

Yes, that thing. Let us get it over with.

It happens sometimes. It’s an adrenal response to a hot wax strip being ripped off your body, not a romantic overture, and every licensed waxer in this building has seen it more times than they can count. Nobody comments, nobody cares, and it typically resolves itself the instant the first strip comes off. Pain is a remarkably efficient mood killer.

photo-of-a-shirtless-man-looking-at-the-ocean-while-strolling-along-a-beach

The rest of it’s boring, which is the goal. You strip from the waist down, get on the table, and your waxer asks about medications and skin sensitivities. You will shift positions a few times and get asked to hold skin taut, including your own equipment, because taut skin releases wax cleanly and hurts less. Our speed waxers work in small sections and move fast, because a confident pull hurts less than a hesitant one.

On hygiene, because it matters more in this zone than anywhere else: we never double-dip, which is exactly what you should screen for when choosing a salon. We use fresh disposable table paper for every client, and implements are washed, soaked, and run through a UV sterilizer between appointments.

Fifteen minutes. Then you’re putting your pants back on and wondering what you were so worked up about.

Does It Get Easier After the First Time? Yes, and Not Just Psychologically

Guys who nearly cancelled their first appointment come back five weeks later and describe an almost entirely different experience.

There’s a real mechanism behind that: Pulling hair from the root repeatedly weakens the follicle. Each cycle, it regenerates something thinner and sparser than before. Less density means fewer strips, less surface area per pass, and less total discomfort. Your growth cycles also start to sync up, so more of your hair is ready to come out at the same time instead of trickling back in over three weeks.

Three or four consistent sessions at 4- to 6-week intervals is where most men notice the drop. Shaving, on the other hand, cuts hair at the surface, leaves it blunt and coarse, and resets any progress you had made. That’s the whole case for men and waxing over the razor: it compounds. Shaving just keeps you on a treadmill.

Manzilian Aftercare: Respect the 5 S's for 48 Hours

photo-of-a-man-looking-at-his-feet-while-lounging-on-a-beach

Your follicles are open, and your skin has had a day. For 24 to 48 hours, avoid the 5 S's: sun, saunas, sweat, synthetics, and sex. Add hot tubs, pools, and hot showers to that list. Cool water only.

Skip fragranced lotion, acids, and retinol on the area during that window. Freshly waxed skin does not need active ingredients picking a fight with it.

Wait 72 hours before you start exfoliating this particular zone, since it’s more delicate than an arm or a leg. Then go 2 to 3 times a week with a physical exfoliator, staying off the penis and testicles entirely, and follow with an ingrown serum to clear the follicle from the inside. This step decides whether you get smooth skin or a crop of ingrown hairs at week two. If a bump does show up, do not pick it. Warm compress, gentle exfoliation over the area, patience.

Some redness right after is normal and usually settles within a few hours. Your waxer will walk you through it all before you leave, but in case you need a reminder, we have a complete aftercare guide available, too.

So Is a Manzilian Worth It? The Honest Trade

Let’s talk numbers: A Brazilian wax is $65 and covers crotch, penis, testicles, and bum crack. A Manzilian wax (which includes full bum cheeks) is $85. Both are unisex and priced identically regardless of anatomy, so no, you’re not paying a premium for being a guy.

For that, you get 4 to 6 weeks of smooth, no razor burn, no itchy stubble phase, no nicks in places where nicks are a genuine emergency, and hair that comes back finer every round.

Speaking of nicks, this is the part of male pubic hair removal nobody puts in the brochure. In a nationally representative survey published in JAMA Dermatology, about 25.6% of people who groom their pubic hair reported a grooming-related injury, with lacerations the most common type. Among men, the most frequently injured site was the scrotum, at 67.2% of reported injuries, thanks to razors, in your own hands, in your own bathroom, with your own poor lighting.

FAQs: The Stuff You Googled at 2 a.m. in Incognito Mode

Does a Manzilian hurt more than a Brazilian wax?

No, they’re comparable. Coarser hair makes a male Brazilian wax slightly more work to remove, but the skin in the area is usually a bit thicker, which takes some of the edge off. We perform both daily, and the pain lands in the same range.

Do I have to take it all off?

No. Tell your waxer what you want left and where. Plenty of men keep the mound and clear everything below and behind it. It’s your hair; we just work here.

Should I take ibuprofen or use a numbing cream?

A standard dose of ibuprofen about an hour before does no harm and may take a little off the top. Numbing creams are a bigger commitment for a 15-minute appointment, and they need time under wrap to work at all. Prep, hair length, and a fast waxer will do more for you than either one.

Is a Manzilian embarrassing?

For about ninety seconds, maybe. Then it’s just a Tuesday. Your waxer is thinking about wax temperature and hair direction, not about you.

How far before a trip or event should I book?

If this is your first wax ever, plan on two appointments before the big day, spaced four to six weeks apart. The first one is a test run to see how your skin handles it, and the second is the one that leaves you actually smooth. If you're already a regular, two to three days ahead is the sweet spot. That gives redness time to settle and stray bumps time to surface and clear at home instead of on vacation.

Can I get a Manzilian with sensitive skin?

Usually yes, but say so before we start so we can adjust technique. Skip your appointment if you have active irritation, a sunburn, or you’re on medications that thin the skin.

Ready to Commit to the Pain?

Look, you’ve just read an entire article about whether a Manzilian hurts. You’re going to book it eventually. It hurts, it’s over in about fifteen minutes, and every session after this one is easier than the one before it.

Ted D Bare Pain Co has been San Jose's body-waxing-only studio since 2006, which means we don’t squeeze Manzilians in between facials and lash fills. Just licensed waxers, soft wax we formulate ourselves, and a speed record nobody in the Bay Area has touched.

Book your Manzilian and stop thinking about it. Still stalling? Fine. Go read the rest ofour blog first, then book.
